A BIT OF HISTORY

Formerly, the present district of Gracia was an independent town of Barcelona and in the beginning, the Paseo de Gracia joined the small Villa de Gracia with large capital.

Back then it was known as the Way of Jesus and the name came from the Franciscan convent of Santa Maria de Jesus, situated between the current Paseo de Gracia and the streets of Aragon, Consell de Cent and Pau Claris. It was the only building of Barcelona plain outside the city walls. And until the 1820s, the road was a simple country road that connected the Portal del Angel, one of the gateways to Barcelona, with the villa.

The walk itself was opened in 1827, it was 42 meters wide and was once the favorite place of the aristocracy to showcase their skills in the art of riding and luxury cars. In the last decade of the century, gradually the whole area of the city was acquiring a commercial protagonism attracting the bourgeoisie, which made them go replacing isolated houses with garden apartment buildings.
